Hawthorn

24 × 32 cm (9½ × 12½ in)

I painted this much larger than life – my berries were at least four times bigger than the real ones. This meant that I had to exaggerate the textures within the leaves.

Gather a selection of leaves and allow them to fall into a series of interesting random patterns of both positive and negative shapes. Make sketches of the different designs and choose one to turn into a watercolour.

Create a collage by cutting or tearing leaf shapes out of tissue paper or any other material you have. Stick them onto board, using your chosen arrangement for reference. Cover the collage with gesso and then apply paint to create further leafy textures.
